Emma L. Backer

Emma Backer is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised on Vancouver Island, BC, presently living in Toronto, Ontario and attending OCAD University for Drawing and Painting. Her artwork centres around themes of time, memory, absence, and experience, utilizing colour, line, and composition to evoke internal and emotional responses from the viewer. Working primarily in oil paints, charcoal, and pastels – alongside experimentations in performance, film, and sculpture – Emma’s work is colourful, evocative and suggestive, leaving its translation open to interpretation. Aside from the purely abstract or representational, most of her art focuses on personal experiences that can be translated into multiple meanings and connections.
